A "Child Friendly City" (CFC) is a designation granted by UNICEF to cities that demonstrate a commitment to making the urban environment better for children by prioritising their rights, safety, and well-being. This status recognises cities that actively involve children in decision-making processes and create environments that support their rights under the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child.
Manchester City Council has an ambition for Manchester to be a place that advances children’s rights, a place that can demonstrate that children feel safe, heard, cared for and are able to flourish as a result. We Love MCR Charity wholeheartedly supports our partners at Manchester City Council in this aim of achieving CFC status, and as such we firmly place the wellbeing and development of our city’s children at the heart of our work.
Our unique Manchester's Rising Stars Fund [MRSF] supports young people across the city to have a fair chance in life by equipping them with the vital equipment, training and recourses they need to succeed. Our Stronger Communities Fund [SCF] welcomes applications from community groups across the city who support our city’s young people. Through the SCF we support many youth focused activities and projects across the city that allow young people a place to meet friends, play and enjoy themselves - as referenced in Article 31 of the convention.
We also support both Article 12 and 13 – WLMC are committed to ensuring that young people’s voices are heard and listened to. We are working toward this with an aim to welcome young people into decision-making panels about our work and where our funds for young people are awarded, recently seen when we invited Young Manchester to review our digital output.
As part of these efforts, we are proud to say we featured in Manchester City Council’s BREE launch (Brokering Relationships with Employers and Educators), working to create long-lasting networks for young Mancunians to work in careers across various industries within our city.
We are looking forward to continue working alongside Manchester City Council to ensure Child Friendly City status is achieved and making Manchester the best place in the world for children to live!
